all, while rifle sales begin to spike - including here in the bay area. more on that ahead. but first - catherine heenan has more on the connecticut school massacre. catherine? >>catherine: it's been four days since the school shooting in connecticut. the people of newtown are trying to return to some sense of routine.even as more children are buried. the children headed back to school tuesday were met by specially trained teachers. those staffers spent monday with experts - learning how to best handle the aftermath of the tragedy. the children >> one of the best things that we could do is have a sense of a return to normalcy. school as part of that. >>catherine: the children of sandy hook elementary are 'not' back in class yet. and probably won't be until after christmas. moving trucks continue to empty out their building.moving equipment to a vacant middle school where they'll go back to class.meantime.the sad string of funerals

continued. 6-year-old jessica rekos is one of the 20 children gunned down friday morning. her funeral service began only minutes after another one - for classmate james mattioli - had wrapped up. while investigators promise answers in what happened. many wonder if it will ever really be clear why 20-year- old adam lanza did this. the fbi is trying to recover information from his hard drive.but one agent said 'the kid knew what he was doing' - referencing the fact adam apparently deliberately destroyed his hard drive to erase valuable evidence. a home search turned up no mental health medication. and authorities say lanza left no note or letter. no explanation for why he targeted innocent children. the one person who might have offered some answers - adams mother nancy. another of his victims. police say he shot her 4 times in the head. today one of the people visiting a memorial was a former schoolmate of adam's. alan diaz know him

back in 2008.when he was a high school freshman and adam lanza was a sophomore. >> "we all kind knew that like you know, he had problems socially and we had a feeling that there might have been something wrong with him, but obviously we never asked, we never thought it was our place to do so." >> "the acts he did that day might have been evil, but at one time.he was just another kid." >>catherine: across the country. the debate over tighter gun control is in overdrive. and today president obama reaffirmed his support of a plan to introduce a bill to ban assault weapthe white house press secretary made the announcement. >> he is actively supporting of of feinstein's and state of intent to reviand provide a piece of legislation that would reinstate and revive a piece of legislation. >>catherine: the president also wants to close a gun

show loophole. and ban high capacity ammunition clips. >>pam: the maker of one of the guns used during the school shooting. is now up for sale. the private equity firm - "cer-berus capital management" - is selling freedom group. that is the maker of the bushmaster 2- 23 rifle. the firm wants to avoid the intensified gun control debate and to - quote- protect the interests of its clients. one of those clients is the california state teachers' retirement system. the action comes after officials with california's huge teacher pension fund said, they were reviewing a $600- million investment in cer-berus, in light of the connecticut shooting. the firm issued this statement. quote - "we believe that this decision allows us to meet our obligations to the investors. whose interests we are entrusted to protect. without being drawn into the national gun control debate." and one side of that debate, is calling for stricter gun control laws. which has sent weapons sales sky-rocketing. kron4's scott rates is live

in livermore. scott? >>reporter: this is such a heated debate. many people are asking for stronger gun debate regulations or others are wanting to purchase one for their protection. it is no exception for this shot and livermore this is one hour ago. you can see this- shop in livermore. randy collins is the owner. he has owned this for over five years. as of yesterday, the sales have doubled. normally, they would sell anywhere from 15-20 per day. since yesterday, they have sold 100 guns. i asked mr. collins about the screening process this is what he said. >> there is a lot of chance of interaction. if i get a really bad feeling i would

that visible inside of the vehicle. >>reporter: police say the culprit could also be someone familiar with the area and suggest residents form or join a neighborhood watch group. in morgan hill >> there will case the neighborhood, come in and take it and they are gone. >> also this could be somebody that is familiar with the area. perhaps they would think about forming a neighborhood watch group. rob fladeboe kron 4 news >>pam: also in morgan hill, the search is on for a bank robber. police released this photo from a surveillance camera. the wells fargo bank at the corner of monterey road and main street. about 1:45 saturday afternoon. he passed a note to a teller, demanding money and said that he had a gun. no gun was seen and no one was hurt, but the man escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash. and was last seen heading south on monterey road.

and 34 degrees. you can anticipate frost, slippery sidewalks and even black ice. >>pam: a sinkhole is undermining a portion of marsh creek road near morgan territory road. in clayton. the contra costa county department of public works says, a cavern, eight- feet in diameter was discovered underneath the asphalt yesterday. the road was closed overnight until crews could begin repairs. they believe it was caused. when an old storm drain gave way during the heavy rains. >> it is one of those situations when it is probably over 50 years, corroded the infrastructure underneath the surface. it just gets washed along. >>pam: crews today are reinforcing the trouble spot on the roadway with steel plates. until a permanent fix can be made. eye on that area during the

>>pam: taxes could be on the way. tonight, kron4's dan kerman if talks about what you can do before the end of the year. to protect what's in your but first - catherine heenan has an update on where negotiations stand right now. catherine? >> there's some optimism that lawmakers are closing in on a budget deal. president obama and house speaker john boehner have been continuing to talk. a couple of details on where things stand: boehner would allow income tax rates to rise for people making more than a million dollars a year.and would hold rates

where they are for everyone making less. initially - republicans didn't want 'any' taxes to go up. and the president would freeze income tax rates for taxpayers making 400- thousand dollars or less.he originally wanted that number to be 200-thousand. >>pam: kron 4's dan kerman joins us now. and dan tax accoutants and investment advisors are seeing their phones ring off the hook, as investors want to know what they can and should do to protect themselves before we go off the cliff. what are you hearing >> pam, the key here is that there are still a lot of unknowns as it relates to the fiscal cliff. and how that might impact tax rates but accountants and investment advisors say there is a tax we do know is coming and you may want to take action before the end of the year.. we're talking about the new individuals earning more than 200-thousand dollars and couples earning more than 250-thousand dollars. >> they will pay a medicare tax on income derived from the sale of stock, dividends, from taxable interest. from rent. or any

officials are saying that this investigation continues saturday. called to a horrific scene colorado authorities were called to a place that left four people dead. it happened in this neighborhood in longmont in the longview estates subdivision-- about 40-miles north of denver. police say they received an four in the morning. when they arrived on the scene, they discovered the bodies of four people. officials say an investigation is now under way. >> temperatures in the 20's with an active storm pattern returning on thursday that could return with the heaviest rainfall on thursday. that could go friday with gusting winds at 40 m.p.h. ishowers continuing with details on what we can expect in my next report. >>pam: the a's are making a little offseason news by bringing in a player from japan. .kron four's jason appelbaum joins me with more on the

tracking a call from an anonymous source. it could be a prank but needless to say nobody wants to take any chances. the campus is still on lockdown. this student is huddled with about 60 people. and a woman called in from the career technology center. she was alerted by an automatic emergency response system that is activated a speaker. a message was broadcast about an emergency on broadcast. that is how people are being informed. she is at the tech center and they are watching to the windows. some of these evening students possibly could not have known about this that are on campus. they are alerting the students that are " side. from inside. and a father of one of the students, james bal oneowan.. saying that the

lockdown. there are police, choppers, and the police said that yesterday there was a report of a man on a campus with a knife. people are of course nervous after the connecticut massacre. we just received this advisory they are assisting the city police and the, the police and the campus-police. it has not been confirmed but they are taking this very seriously. several people have called 911. as of 6:00 p.m., there have been no injuries or reports. and no gunman has been located and no gunfire has been heard which is an important point. the san jose police and the san jose college city college police are actively searching all the buildings.

looking at a video from abc seven this was shot earlier this evening. nonetheless, there are a number of law enforcement with the san jose police, campus police to. they are going to the campus buildings, class by class, room by room. to make sure that everyone is sake. you can imagine how tedious this is to make sure that everyone is -- safe, room by room. there was an automatic alert phone system on campus to make sure that they needed to stay in place. authorities are trying to determine if this is a real situation. or if this was a prank call in to authorities. we have the district chancellor.

we are in morning-and as we have learned and recent trading the gun violence is escalating out educational institutions. as the chancellor of its institutions it is significantly a concern of what must be done and what should be done. we have done preventative like active shooter training. and also campus exercises but of course that is not enough. i certainly hope that this is without incident this evening. i am confident that our police are trained to handle that. >>pam: you are not able to or estimate how many students could be impacted how about the number of staff? >> i would relate not be able to share with you information like that unless
